Musical background and style

Home Free's third album for Columbia, Country Evolution, was released in September 2015 and included guest appearances by Charlie Daniels, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Taylor Davis. A fourth album, Timeless, appeared in September 2017, debuting at three on the country chart. Two years later, Dive Bar Saints found Home Free primarily concentrating on original material. In 2020, the group issued a new holiday collection, Warmest Winter, that featured a set of yuletide favorites and a handful of self-penned songs. Sounds of Lockdown, a collection of songs recorded while the group was laying low during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, arrived in July of the following year. For their next release, Home Free tried a new approach.

During that time, the group arranged for substitute performers to fulfill their previously-scheduled concert commitments. The series was televised in December 2013, and the group headlined the Sing-Off tour across 32 cities in 2014. Lundquist and the Rupp brothers all have bachelor's degrees in music. Adam Rupp's primary instrument is trumpet, but he also plays drums, keyboard, and bass guitar. Since joining, Foust and Brown have also become very active in writing and arranging. Part of Home Free’s appeal is their ability to perform any style of music, with artists from any genre. In 2013, after Home Free had already released five records independently, the group competed in the NBC show, The Sing-Off, with a cappella groups vying for the grand prize of $100,000, and a recording contract with Sony. Home Free won the season, by performing songs like Florida Georgia Line‘s “Cruise,” “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash, and more.
While the group was able to go full-time on the road in 2007, playing at events, festivals, and such, they were unable to keep a bass for more than a year. Chris Foss sang as their bass in 2007, then they had Elliott Robinson between September 2008 and June 2009, and was then replaced by Troy Horne the same month. During this time, while they were back in Minnesota in 2008, they had met current member, Rob Lundquist, while he worked in a bar, and subsequently recruited him. Home Free has attracted millions of fans, and sold out large venues and arenas all over the globe.

In September 2016 they had their first concert in Central Europe at the "2nd European Country Festival" in Pertisau, Austria. In September 2019 they began their Dive Bar Saints World Tour, which was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2019 they began their Dive Bar Saints Christmas Tour in the US. He married Ericha in September of 2010 and together they have a child. Most of his family is musically inclined with his brother Chris being a member of Home Free, his sister Tristin being an actress and singer, and his mother being involved in music as well. Chris Rupp formed the group in 2000 in Mankato, Minnesota while a few of the members were still only in their teens, with the original members being Chris and Adam Rupp, Matt Atwood, Darren Scruggs, and Dan Lemke. When deciding on a name for the group, they took into account the help they received from Atwood's grandfather, and named it after a boat of his that was called Home Free. On October 8, 2020, the band announced an Indiegogo campaign to fund a virtual holiday concert called "Warmest Winter" to coincide with the release of a new CD of the same name. The campaign met its initial funding goal in nine hours and stretch goals were added for further funding. The pre-filmed concert was streamed from December 2 to 5, 2020, and featured guest appearances by Alabama and The Oak Ridge Boys, among others.
